Ember Rise
About Ember Rise
Play Ember Rise free online in your browser, no download and no sign-up needed. A single paper lantern lifts off into a dark sky and never stops climbing. You sweep a glowing deflector bar above it and the lantern drifts along after the bar, so one motion steers the climb, catches rocks, spiked iron and hovering drones, and flicks them off into the dark before they can touch the paper.
The climb speeds up the higher you get, and the sky changes with you: every four hundred metres opens a new zone with a different colour and a heavier stream of debris. Rocks come first and fall straight. Spikes drop faster. Drones arrive from the second zone onwards and drift sideways. Higher still, molten magma rocks tumble down fast, red-eyed seekers steer toward your lantern, and comets sweep in horizontally from the screen edge after a warning flash — the deflector rides above the lantern and cannot block those, so you have to move early. The timing you learned on the way up stops working and you have to read each one.
Amber sparks float down for extra points and are caught with the bar, and the rare guard token widens your deflector for a few seconds, which is usually the difference between surviving a crowded stretch and losing the lantern. One hit ends the run, so every metre is earned. Climb high, deflect clean, and put your altitude on the leaderboard.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ember Rise?
Ember Rise is a vertical endless arcade game. A paper lantern rises through the night sky on its own while rocks, spikes and drones fall towards it. You control a deflector bar above the lantern; the lantern drifts after the bar while you sweep falling debris out of the way. The run ends the moment something touches the lantern, and your score is how far you climbed.
Is Ember Rise like Rise Up?
Yes, it follows the same idea: your hands are on the shield, and the fragile thing tags along behind it. In Ember Rise the lantern drifts lazily after your deflector, so steering the climb and blocking debris are one motion. On top of that it adds six kinds of hazard that behave differently, zones that change the sky and the difficulty every four hundred metres, collectable sparks and a guard token that widens your deflector.
How do I control the deflector?
On a phone or tablet, drag your finger anywhere on the screen and the deflector follows it. On desktop, move the mouse or hold the left and right arrow keys, or A and D. The bar tilts as it travels, but only the horizontal position matters for blocking.
What do the sparks and the guard token do?
Amber sparks are worth twenty five points each and are safe to touch. The guard token is rarer and widens the deflector for eight seconds, which makes crowded stretches much easier to survive. Both drift down with everything else and are caught with the deflector bar itself: unlike debris, touching them collects them instead of flinging them away.
How is the score calculated?
Your score is the altitude in metres you reached, plus two points for every hazard you deflected and twenty five for every spark collected. Altitude dominates, so a long careful climb beats a short flashy one, and the altitude keeps rising faster the higher you go.
