About Scrapwing
Scrapwing is a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up in pixel art. You start every run as a bare cockpit with one small gun, and everything else you have to take from the enemy.
Shot-down cargo carriers drop hull parts, and so does every formation you wipe out completely. A part floating near your ship snaps onto the free spot of the hull closest to it, so where it lands depends on how you catch it. Parts further away can be reeled in with the tractor beam: hold Shift and the beam grabs the nearest part and pulls it to your hull, while a blinking outline shows where it will land. Your guns stay quiet while the beam is pulling, so pick your moment. There are six kinds: cannons that fire forward, spread guns that fan out to the side they sit on, lances that pierce a whole line of enemies, homing missiles, armour plates that take three hits, and thrusters that make the ship faster.
Every part is a weapon and a shield at the same time. A bullet that hits a part breaks it off, and anything that is no longer joined to the cockpit falls away and can be caught again. Only a hit on the cockpit itself costs a ship. A big ship hits hard but is also a big target, and every part adds weight that slows you down unless you add thrusters too.
When the screen fills up, jettison: every part on the hull flies off at once as a bomb that wipes out the enemy bullets, smashes whatever it hits and pays points for each part. It can save the run, but you start building again from the bare cockpit.
The flight goes through four levels, each with its own boss: the debris belt above an orange gas giant and the Salvage Crawler whose claws rip parts off your hull, the canyons of an ice moon and the Cryo Walker whose beam freezes your guns, a living hive in a violet nebula and the Hive Mother guarded by her egg pods, and finally the hull of an enemy dreadnought and its reactor core in three phases.
The score counts every enemy shot down, every part jettisoned, a bonus for each boss and for each level cleared without a hit to the cockpit, and a bonus for every ship left after the last boss.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get new weapons in Scrapwing?
Shoot down the cargo carriers and wipe out complete enemy formations. Each drops a hull part, and the part snaps onto your ship when you fly close to it or reel it in with the tractor beam. Cannons, spread guns, lances and missiles add firepower, armour plates and thrusters change how the ship survives and moves.
How do I catch parts that are far away?
Hold Shift, or the GRAB button on touch screens. The tractor beam locks onto the nearest part within reach and pulls it onto your hull. A blinking outline shows the spot it will take, and your guns stop firing until the part is attached.
What happens when a bullet hits my ship?
If it hits a part, that part breaks off, and anything no longer connected to the cockpit falls away so you can catch it again. If it hits the cockpit in the middle, you lose a ship and every part is blown off.
What does jettison do?
It throws every part on your hull outward at once. The flying parts smash enemies, every enemy bullet on the screen disappears, and each part is worth 10 points. Afterwards you start building the ship again from the bare cockpit.
How many levels are there?
Four: the debris belt, the ice moon, the hive and the dreadnought. Each one ends with its own boss, and your ship and its parts carry over from one level to the next.
How is the score calculated?
Every enemy shot down is worth points, every jettisoned part pays 10, each boss pays 500 times the level number, and a level cleared without a hit to the cockpit adds 250. Beating the last boss adds 300 for every ship you have left.
Can I play Scrapwing on my phone?
Yes. Drag anywhere on the screen to steer the ship, the guns fire on their own, and the JETTISON button sits below the play field.
